Many of us might be thinking antibiotics are an invention of modern science. But we should consider the fact that there was a natural way in which sickness was treated in ancient days without the help of modern medicine. You can find many natural antibiotics in the medical stores which are made from extracts of certain plants, foods and essential oils. But it is important that you check for the ingredients of the medicine as not all medicine that claim as natural are not actually natural. 1. Honey

There is no special mention of how much we love having our pancakes with honey. But how many of you actually know that honey is the oldest known antibiotic to mankind. Honey was used as a skin protectant by people in the early ages itself. It was applied to wounds as an ointment to heal and prevent any further infection. Due to the low pH level of honey, moisture is drawn out of the wounds which leads to deaths of bacteria in the affected area. All you have to do is apply some raw honey directly on to your wound.

Honey contains hydrogen peroxide which is known to have antibacterial properties and because of its high sugar content, honey inhibits the growth of certain bacteria as well. A tablespoon of honey mixed in a warm cup of herbal tea can fight the internal bacteria also.

2. Garlic

Garlic is known for the wide range of medicinal properties it has to offer. Though garlic is known to have antimicrobial properties from ages, garlic concentrates have shown antibacterial properties in recent studies. Applying mashed garlic cloves or paste of garlic cloves on the wound can help fighting the germs.

Taking garlic along with your food can also benefit in destroying internal microbes. But be sure not to take more than 2-3 garlic cloves per day as excess garlic can lead to internal bleeding. Also, consult a doctor or dietician before if you are planning on taking garlic supplements.

3. Oregano

Be it as a seasoning or as an essential oil, not everyone of you are aware of oregano as an antibiotic. But researchers have found that oregano is a much effective as an antibiotic when it is in the form of an essential oil. You have to add a few drops of this oil to water and apply on the infected area to get rid of fungal infections.

Oregano has an ingredient called Carvacrol that can promote the healing of gastric ulcers and inflammation when inhaled. You can also use oregano essential oil in your diffuser to treat sinus infections, but ingesting oregano essential oil or using it in an undiluted form on your skin is strictly prohibited.

4. Neem

Neem is one tree you can find almost anywhere in India without an effort. Neem can be used either in the form of a paste or an oil. It is popular for its purifying abilities and has been used in ayurvedic medicines for more than two hundred centuries.

You can apply neem essential oil of paste made from neem leaves on your skin to get rid of bacteria on the affected region. Applying the paste of neem leaves to your scalp can help you get rid of dandruff effectively. It can even be used on your face to get rid of pimples and dermatitis. Consuming neem is safe unless you are taking it in large doses, which can harm your liver and kidneys.

5. Onions

Onions are one of the most powerful kitchen ingredients to add that touch of flavour in soups, stir fries and stews. Little did you know about onions that it contains flavonoids that makes them a natural source of antibiotics. Besides that, they contain compounds called cysteine sulfoxides which are therapeutic in nature.

For added benefits, cut open the onions and let them sit for about 10 minutes. This is a way to increase their phytonutrient content. Saute the onion slices with virgin coconut oil, add a couple of raw garlic cloves and mix them. You can add this to your meals in order to inhibit the harmful bacteria and viruses in your body.

Besides the above mentioned ones, our mother nature has given many other sources of antibiotics like ginger, myrrh extracts, thyme, echinacea, goldenseal etc to fight the microbes and get rid of many common illnesses.
